Tour story

The Arun Valley trek is a remote and less-traveled trekking route in eastern Nepal, nestled between two major national parks: Sagarmatha (Everest) and Makalu Barun. This trail follows the Arun River, one of the deepest valleys in the world, and is ideal for trekkers seeking solitude and immersion in untouched nature. Unlike the more commercialized Everest or Annapurna treks, the Arun Valley offers an authentic experience through traditional Rai and Sherpa villages, lush forests, and terraced farmlands, with continuous views of snow-capped Himalayan peaks including Makalu (8,485 m), the fifth highest mountain in the world.

The trek typically begins with a flight to Tumlingtar and ascends gradually through remote settlements like Chewabesi, Num, and Seduwa, eventually connecting to the Makalu Base Camp trail or the Everest Base Camp trail depending on the itinerary. The region’s biodiversity is a highlight — with rare wildlife, orchids, rhododendrons, and an abundance of bird species making it a haven for nature lovers. Cultural encounters are equally rich, offering insight into local customs, ancient monasteries, and traditional agrarian lifestyles of ethnic groups often overlooked on more popular routes.

Though physically demanding due to its steep ascents and descents, the Arun Valley trek is non-technical and suitable for trekkers with good fitness and a taste for adventure. Infrastructure is more basic compared to well-established trekking regions, so some logistical preparation or hiring a guide is recommended. This off-the-beaten-path journey rewards travelers with a deep sense of wilderness, cultural authenticity, and majestic Himalayan scenery, making it a hidden gem among Nepal’s trekking routes.
