Rara Lake Trek
The Rara Lake Trek is a remote and less-traveled trekking route in the far northwestern region of Nepal, taking adventurers to the stunning Rara Lake — the largest lake in the country, located at an altitude of 2,990 meters. The trek is part of Rara National Park, a protected area known for its serene natural beauty, alpine meadows, pine forests, and a rich variety of flora and fauna. Unlike more commercialized treks like Everest or Annapurna, Rara offers a more solitary and tranquil experience in the lap of nature.
The journey typically begins with a flight to Nepalgunj and then to Jumla, a gateway town surrounded by hills and traditional villages. The trail winds through scenic valleys, terraced fields, and forested ridges, offering occasional glimpses of distant Himalayan peaks. Along the way, trekkers encounter the unique culture of the local Thakuri and Tibetan-influenced communities, whose way of life has remained largely untouched by modern development. Accommodations are basic, usually in teahouses or homestays, adding to the trek's rustic charm.
The highlight of the trek is the arrival at the turquoise waters of Rara Lake, which spans over 10 square kilometers and reflects the surrounding snow-capped peaks and forests in its crystal-clear surface. Trekkers often spend a day or two exploring the lake’s shoreline, watching migratory birds, and soaking in the peaceful ambiance. Arriving in Kathmandu for the Rara Lake trek is the first step into Nepal’s serene and less-traveled western region. The contrast between Kathmandu’s lively streets and the tranquil beauty of Rara Lake makes the journey even more rewarding. This brief stay sets the stage for an unforgettable adventure to Nepal’s largest and most pristine alpine lake.
On the first day, we will be flying to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu. The flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj is a short yet scenic journey, taking approximately one hour. Nepalgunj, located in the southwestern Terai region of Nepal, serves as a major gateway for treks to Dolpo and other remote areas. The flight offers stunning aerial views, transitioning from the rolling hills of the Kathmandu Valley to the flat, tropical plains of the Terai. Nepalgunj itself is a bustling city near the Indian border, known for its hot climate, diverse culture, and vibrant markets.
The flight from Nepalgunj to Jumla is a short but scenic journey, typically lasting about 40–45 minutes, and serves as the gateway to the Rara Lake Trek. Operated by small domestic airlines, the flight offers breathtaking aerial views of remote hills, rivers, and terraced landscapes of western Nepal. Jumla, located at around 2,300 meters, is one of the highest rice-growing regions in the world and marks the starting point of the trek. Due to its mountainous terrain, flights can be weather-dependent, so flexibility in travel plans is essential.
The trek from Jumla to Chere Chaur marks the beginning of the Rara Lake journey, covering approximately 4 to 6 hours. Departing from Jumla, the trail follows the Jugad Khola river, passing through Khalanga Bazaar, a small market town and several traditional villages. The path meanders through terraced fields and lush forests, offering glimpses of rural life in the remote Karnali region. Chere Chaur, situated at an elevation of 3,055 meters, is a serene meadow surrounded by hills, providing a peaceful setting for an overnight stay and acclimatization before continuing the trek.
The trek from Chere Chaur to Chala Chaur takes about 5–6 hours and offers a scenic journey through dense pine and rhododendron forests. You gradually ascend to the Jaljala Pass at 3,580 meters, which provides stunning views of the Kanjiroba Himal range before descending to the high pasturelands of Jaljala Chaur. The trail then continues through serene meadows to reach Chala Chaur, a quiet campsite at around 2,980 meters, making it an ideal spot to rest and acclimatize for the days ahead.
The trek from Chala Chaur to Sinja Valley is a scenic 6–7-hour journey through lush forests, terraced fields, and traditional villages. As you descend, the landscape transitions from alpine terrain to subtropical river valleys, offering a rich tapestry of flora and fauna. Sinja Valley, once the capital of the ancient Khasa Kingdom, is steeped in history, with archaeological sites and ancient temples dotting the landscape. The valley is also believed to be the birthplace of the Nepali language, adding cultural significance to its natural beauty. Upon reaching Sinja, you can explore these historic sites and immerse yourself in the local culture before continuing your journey to Rara Lake.
The trek from Sinja Valley to Goru Singhe spans approximately 6 hours and offers a journey through diverse landscapes and cultural experiences. Departing from Sinja, the trail follows the Ghatte Khola (stream), ascending gradually through terraced fields and rustic villages. Notably, the route passes the village of Laha, inhabited by the Magar community, known for their traditional architecture and cultural heritage. Continuing along the trail, you reach Goru Singhe, situated at an elevation of 3,050 meters (10,006 feet), where you can camp and rest before the next day's journey toward Rara Lake.
The trek from Goru Singhe to Rara Lake takes around 5-6 hours, gradually ascending through lush pine and rhododendron forests to the scenic Ghurchi Mara ridge at 3,710 meters, which offers stunning views of Rara Lake and the distant mountains. From there, the trail descends through serene woodland and along the Khatyar Khola before reaching the tranquil shores of Rara Lake, where you are rewarded with the breathtaking beauty of Nepal’s largest and most pristine alpine lake.
A day trip to Muldi Viewpoint offers a stunning, panoramic view of the surrounding hills, valleys, and the majestic Himalayas. Located at an altitude of around 3,500 meters, the viewpoint is accessible through a 3-4 hour trek from the nearby village. Along the way, you pass through dense forests of rhododendron and pine, with occasional glimpses of local wildlife. Once at the viewpoint, you are rewarded with breathtaking vistas of peaks like Mount Kanjiroba and the beautiful landscapes of Rara National Park, making it an ideal spot for photography and nature enthusiasts.
The trek from Rara Lake to Pina takes around 4-5 hours, descending gradually through lush forests and alpine meadows. The trail follows the northern shore of Rara Lake, offering beautiful views of the lake and surrounding peaks. As you continue, the landscape changes to subtropical forests, and the path eventually leads to Pina, a small village located at around 2,400 meters. This part of the trek provides a peaceful atmosphere and a chance to experience the rural culture of the area before heading toward the next destination.
The trek from Pina to Bumra offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural immersion. Departing from Pina, the trail descends through terraced fields and dense forests, leading to the Ghurchi Lagna Pass at 3,480 meters, the highest point of the trek. From the pass, you are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and distant peaks. After crossing the pass, the trail continues downhill, passing through small settlements and lush landscapes, eventually reaching the serene village of Bumra. Bumra provides a peaceful setting to rest and reflect before continuing the journey.
The trek from Bumra to Jumla is the final leg of the Rara Lake Circuit, typically taking about 5-6 hours. Starting from Bumra, the trail follows the Sinja Khola river, passing through birch forests and traditional villages. After crossing two suspension bridges over the Hima River, the route ascends to the Danphe Lagna Pass at 3,691 meters—the highest point of the trek. From the pass, you are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and distant peaks. Descending from the pass, the trail leads back to Jumla, where the journey concludes.
At the end of the Rara Lake Trek, you take a flight back to Nepalgunj, which takes about 45 minutes. From Nepalgunj, a domestic flight to Kathmandu follows, typically lasting around an hour. These flights offer scenic views of Nepal’s landscapes, including the foothills and mountains. Due to weather conditions, flights can sometimes be delayed, so it's advisable to keep some flexibility in your schedule when planning your return to Kathmandu.
