Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you will be greeted by a representative from our trekking agency and transferred to your hotel. After checking in, you’ll meet our guide for a detailed trek briefing and to finalize the necessary permits for Upper Dolpo, including the Restricted Area Permit, Shey Phoksundo National Park entry permit, and TIMS card.

On the first day, we will be flying to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu. The flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj is a short yet scenic journey, taking approximately one hour. Nepalgunj, located in the southwestern Terai region of Nepal, serves as a major gateway for treks to Dolpo and other remote areas. The flight offers stunning aerial views, transitioning from the rolling hills of the Kathmandu Valley to the flat, tropical plains of the Terai. Nepalgunj itself is a bustling city near the Indian border, known for its hot climate, diverse culture, and vibrant markets.

Our flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal takes about 35-45 minutes, offering us breathtaking views of the Himalayan foothills and deep river valleys. Juphal, a small mountain airstrip, is the starting point of the Upper Dolpo trek. From Juphal, we are going to trek to Dunai. The trek to Dunai, the administrative center of Dolpa district, takes around 3–4 hours. The trail descends through terraced fields and follows the Thuli Bheri River, passing through small villages and lush landscapes. Dunai, located at 2,140 meters, is a relatively well-developed town with basic facilities, making it a crucial stop before venturing into the more remote regions of Dolpo.

After having breakfast, we are going to start our trek to Ankhe. The trek from Dunai to Ankhe takes around 5-6 hours, following a scenic trail along the Thuli Bheri River before entering the lush forests of Shey Phoksundo National Park. The path ascends gradually, passing through small villages like Sulighat and crossing several suspension bridges. As the trek progresses, the landscape transitions from open riverbanks to dense pine and fir forests, with occasional glimpses of the surrounding hills. Ankhe, situated at around 2,660 meters, marks the entrance to the national park and serves as an ideal resting point before tackling the more challenging trails ahead.

We will start trekking to Sulighat after having an amazing overnight stay at Ankhe. The trek from Ankhe to Sulighat takes about 5-6 hours, featuring a mix of steep ascents and descents through dense forests and rocky trails. The path closely follows the Phoksundo River, offering scenic views of cascading waterfalls and rugged cliffs. Trekkers navigate several ups and downs, making this section both challenging and rewarding. As the trail opens up near Sulighat, the terrain becomes gentler, with glimpses of the surrounding hills and river valleys. Sulighat, located at approximately 2,840 meters, serves as an important stop before heading toward Phoksundo Lake.

Today is one of the highlights of our Upper Dolpo trek as we will be trekking to Shey Phoksundo lake. The trek from Sulighat to Phoksundo Lake takes around 5-6 hours, offering one of the most scenic stretches of the journey. The trail gradually ascends through pine and juniper forests, following the Phoksundo River and passing through the picturesque village of Ringmo, known for its traditional Tibetan-style houses and chortens. As we approach the lake, we are greeted by the stunning sight of Shey Phoksundo, a deep turquoise alpine lake surrounded by towering cliffs and pristine landscapes. At an altitude of about 3,611 meters, Phoksundo Lake is a breathtaking destination, providing a peaceful atmosphere and spectacular views of the Himalayas.

An acclimatization day at Phoksundo Lake allows us to adjust to the altitude while exploring the stunning surroundings. We can take short hikes around the lake, visit the traditional Tibetan village of Ringmo, or explore the ancient Bonpo monastery nearby, gaining insight into the region’s unique culture. The lake’s deep turquoise waters, set against dramatic cliffs and snow-capped peaks, offer breathtaking views and a perfect spot to relax. This rest day is essential for adjusting to higher elevations before continuing the challenging trek into Upper Dolpo.

Today, we will be trekking to Phoksundo Khola camp. The trek from Phoksundo Lake to Phoksundo Khola Camp takes around 5-6 hours, following a rugged trail along the western edge of the lake. The path offers stunning views of the turquoise waters before gradually ascending through rocky cliffs and barren landscapes. As you leave the lake behind, the terrain becomes more remote, with fewer signs of vegetation and civilization. The trail descends toward the Phoksundo Khola (river), where the campsite is set up at approximately 3,600 meters. This peaceful riverside spot serves as an ideal resting point before venturing into the more challenging high-altitude sections of the trek. We are going to camp overnight.

The trek from Phoksundo Khola Camp to Phoksundo Bhanjyang takes around 6-7 hours, involving a steady ascent through a rugged and remote landscape. The trail follows the Phoksundo Khola upstream, crossing several streams and navigating rocky terrain. As you gain altitude, the vegetation thins out, and the path becomes steeper, leading toward the base of the Kang La Pass. Phoksundo Bhanjyang, situated at approximately 4,400 meters, offers stunning views of the surrounding barren hills and distant snow-capped peaks. This campsite is a crucial stop for acclimatization. Our accommodation for today is camping.

After completing our morning ritual, we are going to start trekking to Shey Gompa. The trek from Phoksundo Bhanjyang to Shey Gompa is one of the most challenging yet rewarding sections of the journey, taking around 7–8 hours. The trail begins with a steep ascent to the Kang La Pass (5,350m), the highest point of the trek, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the barren landscapes and distant Himalayan peaks. After crossing the pass, the descent is long and steep, leading into the remote valleys of Upper Dolpo. As you approach Shey Gompa (4,160m), you are welcomed by the sight of the ancient monastery, nestled at the base of the sacred Crystal Mountain. This spiritual and culturally significant site is a highlight of the trek, offering a glimpse into the traditional Buddhist and Bon practices of the region. We are going to camp overnight in Shey Gompa.

An acclimatization day at Shey Gompa allows you to rest and adjust to the high altitude while exploring the spiritual and cultural richness of the region. Shey Gompa, an ancient monastery over 800 years old, is a sacred site for both Buddhists and Bon followers, situated at the base of the revered Crystal Mountain. You can take short hikes around the monastery, visit meditation caves, or circumambulate Crystal Mountain, following the local pilgrimage tradition. The peaceful surroundings, combined with the deep spiritual atmosphere, make this rest day both rejuvenating and culturally enriching before continuing the trek into the remote Upper Dolpo region.

Today we are going to trek to Namduna Gaon Gompa. The trek from Shey Gompa to Namduna Gaon Gompa takes around 6-7 hours, crossing the challenging Shey La Pass (5,010m). The trail begins with a steady ascent, offering breathtaking views of the barren landscapes and snow-capped peaks of Upper Dolpo. After reaching the pass, a long descent follows through remote valleys with little vegetation, highlighting the stark beauty of the region. As you approach Namduna Gaon (4,400m), you encounter the ancient Namgung Monastery, a significant Buddhist site perched on a hillside. This isolated village, surrounded by dramatic cliffs, offers a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of Dolpo’s resilient inhabitants. Our overnight arrangement for today is camping.

The trek from Namduna Gaon Gompa to Saldang takes around 5-6 hours, traversing arid landscapes and high-altitude terrain. The trail begins with a steep ascent over barren hills before descending into the expansive Saldang Valley, one of the largest and most prosperous villages in Upper Dolpo. As you approach Saldang (3,770m), you are greeted by traditional Tibetan-style houses, barley fields, and chortens, reflecting the strong Tibetan cultural influence in the region. Saldang is a key trading hub near the Tibetan border, offering a rare glimpse into the self-sufficient lifestyle of the Dolpo people, who rely on agriculture, trade, and yak herding. Camping overnight.

After camping overnight in Saldang, we are going to trek to Yangze Gompa. The trek from Saldang to Yangze Gompa takes about 4-5 hours, following a less-traveled route through the remote landscapes of Upper Dolpo. The trail gently ascends along the Nagon Khola, passing through small settlements, chortens, and barley fields, showcasing the traditional lifestyle of the region. As you approach Yangze Gompa (4,200m), you can encounter one of Dolpo’s oldest Bon monasteries, an important spiritual site for followers of the ancient Bon religion. The peaceful and isolated setting of Yangze Gompa provides a deep cultural and historical experience, making it a rewarding stop on the journey.

The trek from Yangze Gompa to Sibu takes about 6-7 hours, offering two possible routes: one retracing the path back to Saldang and the other following a more direct but remote trail along the Nagon Khola. The journey passes through small settlements, barren hills, and traditional Tibetan-style villages, providing insight into the local way of life. You gradually descend into the wide, open valley of Sibu (4,000m), a serene campsite near the river, where yaks and livestock graze. The peaceful surroundings and stunning high-altitude landscapes make Sibu a perfect resting spot before continuing the trek deeper into Upper Dolpo.

Jeng La Phedi means ‘Jeng La Pass base’. The trek from Sibu to Jeng La Phedi takes about 5-6 hours, gradually ascending through arid, high-altitude terrain. The trail follows the Teng Khola River, passing through vast grazing lands where yaks and sheep roam. As you gain elevation, the landscape becomes more rugged, with fewer signs of vegetation. The final stretch involves a steep climb to Jeng La Phedi (4,900m), a high-altitude campsite at the base of the Jeng La Pass. The campsite offers stunning views of the surrounding barren hills and serves as an important acclimatization stop before crossing the challenging Jeng La Pass the next day.

Today you will go over the Jeng La Pass at 5,150 m / 16,900 feet. The trek from Jeng La Phedi to Tokyu Gaon via Jeng La Pass is a challenging yet rewarding journey, taking around 6-7 hours. The day begins with a steep ascent to Jeng La Pass (5,090m), offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri range and the vast, barren landscapes of Dolpo. After enjoying the spectacular scenery, you descend through rocky trails and high-altitude meadows, eventually reaching the Tarap Valley. The descent continues along the Tarap Chu River, leading to Tokyu Gaon (4,200m), one of the highest settlements in the world. This traditional village is home to beautiful Tibetan-style houses and Tokyu Monastery, a significant Buddhist site in the region. The day's trek provides a mix of adventure, culture, and stunning Himalayan landscapes.

After finishing our morning rituals and having breakfast, we are going to trek to Dho Tarap. The trek from Tokyu Gaon to Dho Tarap takes about 4-5 hours, following a scenic trail through the picturesque Tarap Valley. The path gradually descends along the Tarap Chu River, passing through wide grasslands, small chortens, and traditional stone houses. As you approach Dho Tarap (4,080m), you enter one of the largest and most culturally rich villages in Dolpo, inhabited by both Buddhist and Bon communities. The village is surrounded by barley fields and is home to several ancient monasteries and prayer flags, reflecting the region’s deep spiritual heritage. Dho Tarap serves as a significant rest stop, offering interaction with the warm and hospitable Dolpo people.

We are going to spend a day in Dho Tarap in order to acclimatize ourselves to higher altitudes. An acclimatization day at Dho Tarap allows you to rest, explore, and immerse yourself in the unique culture of the region. Situated at 4,080 meters, this high-altitude village is one of the most culturally vibrant settlements in Dolpo, home to both Buddhist and Bon communities. You can visit ancient monasteries, interact with the friendly locals, and learn about their traditional way of life, which revolves around barley farming, yak herding, and trade. Short hikes around the village provide stunning views of the Tarap Valley and help with acclimatization before the upcoming trek through remote terrain. This rest day is both a cultural and physical refresh before continuing the journey.

The trek from Dho Tarap to Tarap Khola takes about 6-7 hours, following a scenic trail that descends gradually through the Tarap Valley. The landscape transitions from wide grasslands to a more rugged and narrow gorge as the trail follows the Tarap Chu River. You pass through small settlements and yak pastures, encountering locals who live in this remote region. The route offers stunning views of cliffs, waterfalls, and deep canyons before reaching the campsite at Tarap Khola (3,800m), a peaceful riverside spot surrounded by towering rock formations. This section of the trek highlights the raw beauty and isolation of Dolpo’s wilderness.

The trek from Tarap Khola to Khani Gaon takes around 5-6 hours, following the winding trail along the Tarap Chu River as it flows through deep gorges and rugged cliffs. The path is adventurous, with several river crossings on suspension bridges or stepping stones, adding to the excitement of the journey. As trekkers descend further, the landscape begins to change, with more greenery and scattered villages appearing along the route. Khani Gaon (3,150m) is a small settlement surrounded by terraced fields and traditional stone houses, offering a glimpse into the rural lifestyle of the Dolpo region. The village provides a peaceful resting place before continuing the descent toward lower elevations.

The trek from Khani Gaon to Tarakot takes about 5-6 hours, continuing along the Tarap Chu River as the valley widens and the terrain becomes greener. The trail descends gradually, passing through small villages, terraced fields, and ancient chortens, reflecting the Tibetan-influenced culture of the region. As you approach Tarakot (2,540m), you are greeted by the sight of traditional mud-brick houses and the remnants of an old fortress, which once served as a key trading post. Nestled on a hilltop, Tarakot is a historically significant village with the Sandul Gompa monastery nearby, offering insight into the region’s deep Buddhist heritage. This peaceful village serves as an ideal resting point before the final stretch of the trek.

The trek from Tarakot to Dunai is a scenic journey through the remote and rugged landscapes of Nepal's Dolpo region. The trail meanders along the banks of the Barbung River, passing through traditional Tibetan villages, dense forests, and high-altitude terrain. You experience a mix of culture, nature, and adventure, with views of towering mountains and the chance to explore remote Buddhist monasteries. The trek takes around 5 to 6 days, offering an unforgettable glimpse into the life and beauty of this isolated part of Nepal.

This is your final day of trekking. The trek from Dunai to Jhupal is a scenic journey through the heart of Nepal's Dolpo region. Starting in Dunai, the administrative center of the region, the trail follows the Bheri River, winding through lush forests and terraced fields. Along the way, trekkers pass by small villages, traditional Nepali homes, and ancient monasteries, offering glimpses into the rich culture of the area. The route gradually ascends, providing spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. The trek to Jhupal, a small settlement nestled in the valley, takes around 4 to 5 hours, depending on pace, and is a relatively short yet rewarding experience amidst the serene natural beauty of Dolpo.

Today it’s a short flight back to Nepalgunj then a change of flight on to Kathmandu.
