Tour story

The Upper Dolpo Trek is a remote and challenging trek in western Nepal, taking adventurers through one of the most isolated and culturally rich regions of the Himalayas. Located in the Dolpa district, this trek leads through the vast landscapes of Shey Phoksundo National Park, featuring high mountain passes, deep valleys, and the stunning turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake. The region is influenced by Tibetan culture, with ancient Buddhist monasteries, traditional villages, and a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries. The trek is ideal for those looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience, as it sees fewer visitors compared to popular routes like Everest or Annapurna.

The journey begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then to Juphal, from where the trek starts. Trekkers pass through beautiful villages such as Dunai, Chhepka, and Ringmo, experiencing the hospitality of the Dolpo people. The trek includes crossing high passes like the Kang La (5,350m) and Shey La (5,010m), offering breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and barren landscapes. The highlight of the trek is Shey Gompa, an ancient monastery that holds spiritual significance for Buddhists. Trekkers also witness the unique Bon religion, which predates Buddhism and is still practiced in Dolpo. The challenging terrain, high altitudes, and unpredictable weather make this trek suitable for experienced hikers with good physical fitness.

Since Upper Dolpo is a restricted area, trekkers require a special permit, which adds to the exclusivity of the journey. The region is extremely remote, meaning facilities are limited, and camping is required for most of the trek. The best seasons for the trek are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November), as the weather is more stable. Despite the challenges, the trek rewards visitors with incredible landscapes, encounters with rare wildlife like blue sheep and snow leopards, and an authentic glimpse into one of Nepal’s most untouched cultural regions. For those seeking adventure, solitude, and a deeper connection with the Himalayas, the Upper Dolpo Trek is an unforgettable experience.
